Barauna's contradictions

Kentaro Mori, December 18th, 2003

This is an ongoing compilation of contradictions and strange things Barauna told on different interviews. Here, when not quoting Barauna's own words, we only quote those who actually interviewed Barauna.

What was Barauna doing?

"My attention was called by the big agitation that was heard on the deck of the ship. After several days on the island, we were preparing to take anchor [levantar âncora]. Realizing that many sailors looked scared and pointed upwards, I quickly grabbed my 'Rollei' and diposed myself to photograph whatever it was ... Then, I saw with my own eyes that that I wouldn't believe if I was simply told: a 'flying saucer' doing manuevers on the sky! -- Do you remember the time? -- Around noon".
- Ultima Hora, Feb 20,  1958

"Barauna declared that on January 16th the launch was already being hoisted to the ship when, shortly after 12 o-clock, he heard the captain Jose Teobaldo Viegas and the bank clerk Amilar Vieira Filho, CACEX employee, shouting: 'Look, a 'flying saucer'! Look a 'flying saucer'!'. -- I took around 3 seconds to discern the object. Its shining gave, at first, the impression of a car windshield against the sun. I was already with my 'Rolleiflex' ready, when I realized it against the clouds".
- O Jornal, Feb 21, 1958

"A photography professional, when I go fishing, and even to assorted trips, I always take my 'Rolleiflex'. On the day of january 16th, around noon, I came back from a fishing trip, on a launch and, on returning, was chatting on the ship. At a certain moment, I heard a scream: 'look the saucer!'. Everyone of the group, around twenty people, looked and saw the thing [engenho]. I was with my Rolleiflex hanging on my neck..."
- Ultima Hora, Feb 22, 1958

"It was on January 16, at 12:15 P.M. The ship was preparing to leave the island, to come back to Rio. I was on the deck observing the operations to take aboard the boat used in the trips between the ship and the island (the island has no harbor). The sea was agitated. The weather was cloudy, clear, with no shadows. I had my Rolleiflex 2.8, Model E, which was kept inside an aluminum box for protection against the corrosive effects of water and salt. I had left my Leica with a telephoto lens in my cabin a few moments before. The deck was full of sailors and officers. Suddenly, Mr. Amilar Vieira and Captain Viegas called me, pointing to a certain spot in the sky and yelling about a bright object which was approaching the island. At this same moment, when I was still trying to see what it was, Lieutenant Homero, the ship's dentist, came from the bow toward us, running, pointing out to the sky and also yelling about an object he was sighting. He was so disturbed and excited that he almost fell down after colliding with a cable. Then I was finally able to locate the object, by the flash (of light) it emitted. It was already close to the island. It glittered at certain moments, perhaps changing its own light - I don't know. It was coming over the sea, moving toward the point called the Galo Crest. I had lost thirty seconds looking for the object, but the camera was already in my hands, ready, when I sighted it clearly silhouetted against the clouds."
- Joao Martins, O Cruzeiro, March 8, 1958

"[Barauna] was sure of the reality of the power outage because just before the object appeared a launch was being hauled up from the water by electric pulley, and it stopped midway just as the UFO appeared! A remarkable coincidence?"
- Interview With Almiro Barauna, April 20, 1983

"On the morning of January 16, having fulfilled all of his missions, the crew and skin-divers returned to the ship, which had been anchored close to the island. ... The photographer was not feeling very well: he came sick to the ship and went to lay down on the deck. Soon after 12 noon, amidst shouting and yelling, a lieutenant of the crew called Barauna's attention to the presence of a metallic and disk-shaped flying object, that was flying in the sky towards the ship. Barauna got up, set up his tripod and camera, a Rollerflex [sic], and took the first shot."
